According to the Copernicus European Drought Observatory, half of the European Union and the UK are currently experiencing drought at some level of severity, with about 9 percent of that territory at the most serious alert stage as of July. That is worse than 2018, when only 3 percent of the region reached alert level, though still below the 11 percent recorded during the severe drought of 2022. The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre reports that four of Europe’s major rivers, the Loire, Po, Rhine and Danube, all hit record low water levels in August.
