Bangladesh Prime Minister Tariq Rahman could visit India on a bilateral visit as early as next week, sources in the Bangladesh government have told Times Now. The development comes days after it was reported that a bilateral visit by the Bangladesh Prime Minister to India could take place soon.
According to Bangladesh government sources, there is a “strong chance” of Tariq Rahman travelling to India next week, ahead of the 18th BRICS Summit scheduled for September 12-13. However, the two sides are still working out the details, and a formal confirmation of the visit is awaited.
If confirmed, the visit is expected to assume significance for India-Bangladesh ties and could provide an opportunity for the two sides to discuss key areas of bilateral cooperation.
The final schedule and other details are likely to be announced once the formal arrangements are completed.
Bangladesh PM To Visit India If…: Minister
Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s proposed visit to India has yet to be finalised, with the timing depending on his “schedule” and the “progress” in bilateral discussions, a junior minister in Bangladesh said on Thursday.
“The government is positive about visits to all countries. But it will depend on the Prime Minister’s schedule and on how far discussions between the two countries progress,” State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam told reporters at the foreign office.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had invited his Bangladesh counterpart to join the outreach of the upcoming BRICS summit in New Delhi as India is hosting the event on September 12-13. PM Modi invited Rehman in his capacity as the current chair of BIMSTEC.
The BIMSTEC, the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, is a regional grouping comprising India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal and Bhutan.
