Malaysian royal Princess Tengku Puteri Raja Tengku Puteri Ilyana Alia married British racing driver Christopher Lionel Froggatt in a lavish ceremony in Kuala Lumpur on August 7, attended by members of the Pahang royal family.
The wedding brought together Malaysian royal traditions and a British motorsport connection, with the ceremony held at the Shangri La Hotel in Kuala Lumpur.
Who is Princess Ilyana?
Princess Ilyana is the daughter of Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al Mustafa Billah Shah, the Sultan of Pahang and former King of Malaysia.
Sultan Abdullah became Malaysia’s 16th Yang di Pertuan Agong in 2019 and served a five year term.
Malaysia has a unique rotating monarchy in which nine hereditary rulers take turns serving as the country’s king, with each term lasting five years.
Royal wedding in Kuala Lumpur
Sultan Abdullah attended the wedding alongside Crown Prince of Pahang Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah and other members of the royal family.
The ceremony followed Islamic and Malay royal traditions. Froggatt performed the sunnah prayer before the marriage proceedings.
The couple exchanged wedding rings and completed the presentation of the mas kahwin, a traditional marriage gift. Prayers and royal rituals followed, including Merenjis, a symbolic sprinkling ceremony performed to bless the newlyweds.
Among the other guests were Pahang Chief Minister Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail and Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan of the UAE.
The Royal Household of Pahang congratulated the couple, wishing them happiness, love and prosperity as they begin their married life.
Princess Ilyana’s royal wedding look
Princess Ilyana wore a gown created by Malaysian designer Radzuan Radziwill for the ceremony.
She completed her bridal look with the Queen Azizah Diamond Tiara, a prominent heirloom of the Pahang royal family.
The tiara was originally acquired from Belgian jeweller Wolfers in Brussels and has previously been worn by members of the Pahang royal family during important occasions.
Who is Chris Froggatt?
Christopher Lionel Froggatt, 32, is a British racing driver involved in GT racing, including the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup.
His interest in professional motorsport grew after a Ferrari high performance driving experience at the Fiorano test track in Italy.
Froggatt began racing professionally relatively late compared with many drivers. His passion for cars, quad bikes and motocross eventually led him towards international motor racing.
The wedding marks a new chapter for Froggatt as he joins the Malaysian royal family through his marriage to Princess Ilyana.
