At least five people have been killed and 20 wounded in a Russian attack on the southeastern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, regional authorities say. The attack came as explosions were heard in the capital, Kyiv, where officials said the city was under a ballistic missile attack.
“Five people killed, a further 20 wounded: sadly, the number of casualties continues to rise following the enemy attack on Zaporizhzhia,” Ivan Fedorov, head of the Zaporizhzhia regional military administration, said on Telegram.
Earlier, Fedorov said Russian forces had struck industrial facilities and infrastructure in the city. “The Russians attacked industrial facilities and infrastructure,” he said. “A garage cooperative and residential buildings were damaged.”
Authorities later said nine people had been injured, although Fedorov subsequently gave the death toll as five and the number wounded as 20. Footage released by the regional administration showed a fire burning at the site of one of the strikes.

Ukrainian officials said the city had been targeted with missiles and guided aerial bombs.
In Kyiv, air-raid sirens sounded shortly before a series of loud explosions after midnight. AFP journalists in the capital heard the blasts.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the city was “under ballistic missile attack”. Emergency services were sent to the Shevchenkivsky district, he said, while city authorities reported at least one person wounded.
Russia has increasingly used long-range missiles against Ukrainian cities in recent weeks. Ukraine says Moscow is also strengthening its war effort with further support from North Korea.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said earlier that Russia was preparing to deploy additional North Korean troops and had received new ballistic missiles from Pyongyang.
Ballistic missiles are among the most difficult weapons for Ukraine’s air defences to intercept, with only certain systems, including US-made Patriot batteries, capable of targeting them.
Ukraine has also faced shortages of PAC-3 interceptor missiles, which have become particularly important as the country attempts to defend its cities from Russian missile attacks.
At the same time, Ukrainian forces have stepped up strikes against targets in Russian cities far from the front line.
The latest attacks come as Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine enters its fifth year, with both sides continuing to carry out long-range strikes against each other’s territory.
