Why Younger Men Are Dating Older Women And What They Find In These Relationships

why younger men are dating older women and what they find in these relationships

They met on the dating app Hinge. He is 22 years old. She is 34 years old. For him, it wasn’t complicated, but his friends have a different way of looking at it. “It is a highly respected thing in guys’ group to do an older woman,” says Rohit (name changed).

There is the obvious sexual curiosity around it, of course. But listen to him talk about why he feels comfortable with her and another picture emerges. He remembers getting high in the past and becoming paranoid. With her, he says, he feels calm. He knows that if he cannot drive, she will take him home. If he damages the car, she will deal with it. “Even if I’m unable to drive, I know you will drop me. Even if I hit the car, I know you will take care of it. I know whatever may come, you will handle it.”

It is one of the many reasons and descriptions of what is supposed to be a sexually adventurous age-gap fantasy. We have all heard terms such as “cougar”, “MILF”, “older woman” and “age-gap partner”. And they come with their own baggage. “Cougar” makes it sound predatory, while “MILF” is a sexual fantasy, and “older woman” makes it sound as though her age is the only thing worth mentioning. Even the more neutral “age-gap relationship” carries a sense that something needs explaining.

So why are we talking about older women and younger men in 2026? Because pop culture seems to be having a moment with it. I Want Your Sex, a 2026 erotic comedy directed by Gregg Araki, stars Cooper Hoffman as a young assistant and Olivia Wilde as a renowned artist who takes him on a wild journey as her sexual muse.

Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson in Babygirl (2024), which explores an unconventional relationship between an older woman and a younger man.

The trope of the older woman-younger man has been explored in popular culture. The charm of the fantasy and the forbidden has always been a potent storyline. The iconic Mrs Robinson, played by Anne Bancroft in The Graduate (1967), has a steamy affair with her daughter’s boyfriend, played by Dustin Hoffman. Or the story of a high-powered CEO, played by Nicole Kidman in Babygirl (2024), who ends up having a passionate affair with an intern nearly three decades her junior.

The Hindi film industry has its share of films too, such as Dil Chahta Hai (2001), with Sid, played by Akshaye Khanna, and Tara Jaiswal, portrayed by Dimple Kapadia.

Then there is the story of Kunal, a man in his 20s played by Danish Razvi, who falls in love with Dilbar Sodhi, a progressive woman in her 60s, played by Sarika, in the series Modern Love Mumbai (2022).

And let’s accept that the dating scene in which younger men are seeking out older women is increasing, and it also marks a shift in traditional dynamics. Data from research associated with the Kinsey Institute indicates that roughly one in five young, straight men regularly fantasise about older women.

Justin Lehmiller of the Kinsey Institute, in his book Tell Me What You Want: The Science of Sexual Desire and How It Can Help You Improve Your Sex Life, analysed more than 4,000 American adults. He found that 64% of middle-aged women had thought about sex with a younger man at least once, and 13% reported frequent thoughts or fantasies about younger men.

This reflects broader shifts and documented patterns in modern age-gap attraction and dating dynamics.

In Modern Love: Mumbai, 20-something Kunal (Danish Razvi) falls in love with Dilbar Sodhi (Sarika), a progressive woman in her 60s.

Last year, the Singles in America study by Match found that 30% of singles had dated someone 10 or more years older than themselves, including 25% of men and 34% of women. In contrast, 10 years ago, only 19% of singles had dated someone a decade or more older.

Meanwhile, 29% of singles had dated someone more than 10 years younger than themselves, including 38% of men and 24% of women, typically citing physical chemistry and sexual attraction as the key reasons.

Beyond The Cougar Fantasy

So what is it about older women that attracts younger men?

It also often boils down to emotional maturity that older women portray. For some men, it isn’t easy to find this in women their own age. Some have described older women as more “peaceful” when it comes to dating. There can also be a sense of confidence, independence and knowing what they want.

Numerous threads on Reddit discuss this equation. One Redditor wrote, “Speaking as a guy who’s always been a bit of an old soul, older women are generally just more interesting and fun to be around. Better conversations, more life experience, more reasonable standards, better stories, generally more laidback and secure in themselves… I just don’t really see eye to eye with most women my own age, but I get along with older women like a house on fire.”

There is also the idea that some younger men may like being with someone who is more established and does not necessarily expect them to take on the traditional role of being the provider or the one who is always responsible.

Lehmiller, in Why Older Women Dating Younger Men Are More Satisfied, conducted a survey of approximately 200 heterosexual women in relationships, who happened to be about evenly divided between those who were significantly older than their male partners, those who were significantly younger than their male partners, and those who were close in age to their partners.

He wrote in the article published in Psychology Today: “What I found was that women who were more than 10 years older than their male partners were actually the most satisfied with and committed to their relationships compared with both women who were younger than their partners, as well as women whose partners were close in age. In other words, in spite of the stigma associated with older women dating younger men, the women in these relationships were thriving on average.”

He also added to the angle that some men like being told what to do, and not always being responsible. “We know that a lot of men are into the idea of submitting to a dominant, powerful woman, and they tend to see older women as having those characteristics. After all, this is a big part of the reason why MILF-themed porn is so popular,” wrote Lehmiller.

While the sexual attraction is obvious, not every age-gap relationship is necessarily built to last. Some have even commented on there being no future for a big age gap.

One Redditor wrote, “I dated a woman who was 35 when I was 23. It was probably for the same reason women date older men. She was accomplished, had her own home, drove an Audi convertible, and she was [expletive] hot and made me feel spoiled. The novelty made it fun for me and I’m sure it was the same for her dating a guy who was 12 years younger than her. That being said, there was no real possibility of a long-term relationship and we both knew it.”

Perhaps that is where the real contradiction lies. Dating an older woman may be increasingly normalised, but the idea of building a life together can still bring questions around marriage, family, children and social acceptance.

And perhaps this is why the language around these relationships still feels so loaded. When a man dates a woman older than him, her age often becomes part of the story before anything else about the relationship does.

For Rohit, however, the age gap may have started as something his friends considered a status symbol. But when he explains why he actually feels comfortable with her, sex is not the first thing he mentions. He talks about trust. He talks about knowing that someone will handle things when he cannot.
