Lindsay Clancy Case: Were The Warning Signs Missed? What We Know About Her Reported Postpartum Health Struggles

Lindsay Clancy And Psychiatric Care

A clearer picture of Clancy’s reported struggles began to emerge from testimony about when she first sought psychiatric care. Her outpatient psychiatrist, Dr. Joanne Tufts, testified that she first evaluated Clancy in September 2022, several months after the birth of her youngest child. According to the testimony, Clancy described feeling anxious, overwhelmed by caring for three young children, and distressed about her infant son’s refusal to bottle-feed, while also worrying about the end of her maternity leave. Tufts diagnosed generalised anxiety disorder and adjustment disorder with depressed mood, recommended therapy, and prescribed an antidepressant. Over the following months, Clancy’s medications were reportedly adjusted repeatedly as she complained of worsening symptoms, side effects, and concerns that the drugs might be making her feel worse. Court testimony also indicated that bipolar disorder was considered during her treatment, but Tufts said Clancy did not meet the diagnostic criteria at that time, although another psychiatric provider later prescribed an antipsychotic medication commonly used for bipolar disorder and insomnia.
