US Jobs Shock: Employers Cut 23,000 Jobs in July; Previous Hiring Revised Down

The US economy has witnessed an unexpected decline in jobs in July. Non-farm payrolls fell by 23,000 for the month, compared to the downwardly revised 20,000 for June. The Dow Jones consensus forecast had been implying a gain of 83,000. The unemployment rate fell to 4.1% from 4.2% in June as the labour force participation rate declined further.
