Bengaluru’s five-star hotels are being placed under the scanner, not just for cleanliness, but for the entire food-safety chain as well. 30 teams are currently conducting inspections across Bengaluru.

Kitchen hygiene, pest control, expired ingredients, storage and staff health at Bengaluru five-star hotels are being probed. The biggest find so far, has been 20 litres of expired milk discovered in one of the raids.

The raids are being conducted to probe whether kitchen walls, floors and ceilings are clean and washable. Safe drinking water and testing records, alongside proper garbage disposal and drainage is being checked. Pest control contracts, records and bait maps are also under the scanner.

The inspections are aimed at checking whether the hotels are maintaining raw meat, seafood and vegetables are stored separately. The maintenance of refrigerators and freezers at correct temperatures are being monitored. The storage areas are being checked for expired, adulterated or banned food products. The raw materials are also being inspected for expiry dates, batch numbers and over approved suppliers. The probe also covers the reuse of cooking oil under the guidelines.

The lens is also on the hygiene and safety of staff in the five-star hotels in question. The medical fitness certificates of the food handlers are also being inspected, while the probe remains on the staff’s conditions in terms of typhoid or skin infections along with eye examinations. Clean uniforms, hairnets and masks of the staff members are being checked, while the probe is also on properly trimmed nails and hygienic food-handling practices.
