Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver, most commonly caused by viral infections such as hepatitis B and hepatitis C. Unlike many illnesses, these infections often remain symptom-free for years. During this silent phase, the viruses continue to injure liver cells, gradually causing fibrosis (scarring), cirrhosis, and, in some cases, liver cancer.
