When Is Guru Purnima 2026? Date, Snan-Daan Muhurat and Why It Is Celebrated

Significance of Guru Purnima

Guru Purnima is regarded as a celebration of the Guru-Shishya (teacher-disciple) tradition. According to Sadhguru, “Gu means darkness, Ru means dispeller. One who dispels your darkness is a Guru.” On this day, people honour their spiritual, social, or academic gurus, seek their blessings, and express gratitude for their guidance. It is believed that on the full moon day of Ashadha, Maharishi Ved Vyas was born. By composing the Vedas, Puranas, and epics like the Mahabharata, he laid a deep intellectual foundation for Sanatan Dharma. Hence, this day is also celebrated as Ved Vyas Jayanti.
