Power brings responsibility and that is why, at this stage of the movement, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke and his team has to choose his words with far greater caution. We all have seen what unfolded during the Chalo Sansad protest on 20th July. Students who had gathered believing they were participating in a peaceful demonstration were met with tear gas, water cannons and lathi charges and there were incidents of women being mishandled. Those scenes were deeply disturbing but that was not the only reality. Videos also emerged of people who did not appear to be students clashing with police, pushing barricades, confronting law enforcement, heckling journalists and in some instances, assaulting members of the media. Several media organisations, including those that had reported sympathetically on students’ concerns, faced fear and intimidation while covering the protest. Police have claimed to have recovered weapons from some.
