Tamil Nadu’s ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on Tuesday reiterated its demand for the complete abolition of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), asserting that it is opposed not only to alleged irregularities in the exam but to the entrance test itself.
In a statement, the party said its “uncompromising and firm stand” was that NEET should be scrapped altogether, amid ongoing student protests over the medical entrance examination in Delhi.
Seeks Greater Powers For States
The TVK also demanded that education be shifted from the Concurrent List to the State List of the Constitution, arguing that states should have full authority over education, including medical education.
The party said that if constitutional or legal hurdles prevent such a move, a Special Concurrent List should be created as an interim arrangement to grant greater powers to state governments over educational matters.
According to the statement, this would serve as both an interim and long-term solution to issues surrounding medical admissions.
Targets DMK Over NEET Promise
Without naming the opposition DMK, the TVK accused its political rivals of indulging in “fraudulent politics” by promising to scrap NEET for electoral gains.
The party said it would never mislead voters by making false promises and maintained that its position on abolishing NEET has remained consistent. It added that Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay had already articulated the party’s vision on the issue.
The statement comes amid renewed debate over NEET following protests in Delhi and criticism over the handling of rapper Therukkural Arivu, who recently raised anti-NEET slogans outside the Tamil Nadu Secretariat before being removed by police.
