For the unversed, more than 50 artists entered FIFA’s design competition, but Gazzaniga’s design was chosen. The trophy is made of 18-carat gold with a green malachite base and stands 36.5 cm (14.4 inches) tall. Gazzania’s family has preserved his legacy, and maintains his office outside Milan, where visitors can see the original sketches, wax casts and the prototype submitted to FIFA more than 50 years ago.
