The surge occurred on the Grand Road (Bada Danda) and near the Singhadwara, the main entrance to the Jagannath Temple, as lakhs of devotees gathered to witness the Rath Yatra and the Pahandi ritual. The ceremony marks the ceremonial procession of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra from the temple’s sanctum sanctorum to their respective chariots before the procession begins.
