A Rivalry With a Long History
This isn’t a new fight. Musk and Altman have been at odds for years as their companies compete for dominance in artificial intelligence, and the tension has only intensified recently. Just months ago, the two were locked in a courtroom battle after Musk, who helped found OpenAI, accused Altman of deceiving him and breaching their agreement when OpenAI shifted away from its original nonprofit structure toward a for-profit model. Musk had pursued as much as $150 billion in damages, but a jury ultimately ruled that he had missed the filing deadlines for his lawsuit. Musk has said he plans to appeal that outcome and has made clear the legal fight isn’t over.
