As India advances towards Viksit Bharat 2047, population issues have gained centre stage. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has aptly described the country as a unique confluence of three Ds — Democracy, Demography, and Diversity. No other nation matches this scale: the world’s largest and most sustained democracy, the biggest population, and extraordinary cultural, linguistic, and social diversity. These attributes provide distinct global advantages but also create complex challenges in crafting effective population policies. India’s vast heterogeneity rules out a uniform, one-size-fits-all approach. It demands sensitivity to varying regional realities, aspirations, and progress levels. While diversity is a strength, it causes wide variations in demographic indicators. India thus needs dynamic, evidence-based, and population-specific solutions — beyond ad-hoc measures — tailored to its complex realities.
