A below-normal southwest monsoon could create multiple challenges for India’s rural economy, affecting everything from farm earnings to food prices and consumer demand, according to a new report by S&P Global Ratings. The global ratings agency cautioned that agriculture and industries closely tied to rural spending, including agrochemicals, tractors, two-wheelers and microfinance, could come under pressure if rainfall remains inadequate during the key monsoon season.
