A man was allegedly beaten to death outside the premises of the Kamakhya Temple in Assam’s Guwahati, police said on Thursday.
The victim has been identified as Rupam Das, a resident of the Kamakhya locality, who was in his late thirties.
According to police, the incident is believed to have stemmed from a heated altercation that turned violent. Investigators suspect that both the victim and the accused were under the influence of alcohol when the fight broke out.
“We suspect that they had a fight in the heat of the moment. They were possibly also under the influence of alcohol. The victim was attacked with sticks and rods,” a police official said.
The accused, identified as Rahul Pathak, a native of Barpeta who currently resides in the Kamakhya locality, has been arrested in connection with the murder.
Police have launched a detailed investigation to ascertain the exact sequence of events and the motive behind the fatal assault.
Further investigation in connection to the case is underway.
