A disagreement over smoking inside a taxi has triggered a debate on passenger etiquette after a video of a cab driver refusing to continue a ride went viral on social media.
The clip, shared on X by Lakshay Mehta, shows the driver confronting a passenger who lights a cigarette while seated inside the vehicle. As the exchange unfolds, the driver makes it clear that smoking is not permitted in his cab.
“Sir, did you ask me before lighting a cigarette? Smoking is not allowed in my car,” the driver is heard saying.
The passenger, however, brushes aside the objection and argues that the driver has no right to stop him because it is a taxi. “Ye toh taxi hai, aap kaun hotey ho mana karne waale? (This is a taxi. Who are you to stop me?),” he says.
He further defends his actions by pointing out that he is paying for the ride. “Paise toh de rahe hai (I’m paying for it, aren’t I),” he adds.
Unwilling to compromise, the driver decides to end the trip instead of arguing further.
“I am cancelling the ride. I don’t want your money. Please get out of my car. I’m a taxi driver, not your servant,” he tells the passenger.
Note: Times now could not independently verify the authenticity of the viral video.
The video concludes with the driver asking the passenger to leave the vehicle, choosing to forgo the fare rather than allow smoking inside his cab.
The incident has generated widespread reactions online, with many users commending the driver for prioritising respect and personal boundaries over earning money. Several argued that paying for a service does not entitle passengers to disregard the driver’s rules or treat the vehicle as they please.
At the same time, some social media users questioned the authenticity of the clip, suggesting it may have been scripted. Even so, many said the message about respecting cab drivers and maintaining basic civic etiquette remained relevant.
