Nita Ambani, the chairperson of the Reliance Foundation and the wife of billionaire Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani, has been giving us a masterclass in India’s rich weaving traditions. While her wardrobe certainly includes couture, some of her most memorable looks have come in handwoven sarees crafted by master artisans from across the country. In a day and age of fast fashion, each saree takes months, and sometimes more than a year, of painstaking craftsmanship. This also makes us appreciate and invest in heritage textiles over fleeting trends. The choice of these sarees shows that the luxury comes from the effort that goes into weaving a single saree. And, not just in big designer label. It also promotes textiles that have been made in India.
