In 1966, when Lyndon Johnson sat in the White House, and the idea of an American woman even running for president was decades from being taken seriously, India had already handed the keys of the entire nation, its army, its treasury, its foreign policy to a woman. Not a boardroom but a country of hundreds of millions, across every language and region. Indira Gandhi did not manage a beverage company. She managed a republic through war, through the Green Revolution, through the birth of Bangladesh. Whatever one thinks of her politics, India trusted a woman with its top job 58 years ago and America is yet to trust one with its presidency even once. That is the headline Ms Nooyi missed.
