The document has a fascinating journey behind it. According to historians, it was seized by the Royal Navy on Christmas Eve 1776 when the British warship HMS Raisonable captured the American vessel Dalton after a seven-hour pursuit off the coast of Portugal. Along with military papers, commissions, and official correspondence from the Continental Congress, the Declaration was confiscated and transported to Britain.
