In a chilling case from Uttar Pradesh’s Agra, a woman allegedly killed her husband, buried his body beneath the bathroom floor of their home, and later covered the spot with a concrete layer to hide the crime. The incident came to light nearly one-and-a-half months later after she reportedly disclosed the information to her brother-in-law.
Police dug up the bathroom floor on Friday and recovered skeletal remains believed to be those of the missing man. The woman has been taken into custody and is being questioned.
According to police, the deceased has been identified as 44-year-old Surendra Kumar Sharma, a native of Bharatpur in Rajasthan, who was living with his wife Ruby, mother Kamla, and two daughters in Renuka Dham Colony in Agra’s Sikandra area.
Family members told police that Surendra was unemployed and addicted to alcohol. His drinking habits frequently led to arguments and alleged domestic violence at home.
According to Surendra’s brother, Anil Sharma, Ruby called him on May 18 and claimed that police were conducting a raid at their house. She asked him to take away Surendra’s mother and the couple’s two daughters. Anil brought them to his home, and Ruby joined them the following day. She allegedly told the family that Surendra had left home and would return in four or five days.
When Surendra did not return, Anil and Ruby jointly lodged a missing person complaint at a local police outpost on May 26. Police also reviewed CCTV footage with Ruby during the investigation, but no clue about Surendra’s whereabouts was found.
According to the family, Ruby continued living with her mother-in-law and children at Anil’s house and even appeared distressed over Surendra’s disappearance. A few days later, Anil sent Ruby, his mother and the children back to Surendra’s house.
Suspicion grew after Anil checked his mother’s bank account, where her pension was deposited. He alleged that Ruby was managing the account and giving his mother only a small portion of the money.
On Friday, Ruby called Anil to the house. When he again asked about Surendra’s whereabouts, she allegedly told him that his body had been buried beneath the bathroom floor.
After receiving the information, police reached the house and excavated the bathroom. Skeletal remains were recovered from beneath the concrete floor and sent for forensic examination.
During questioning, Ruby has not admitted to murdering her husband. According to police, she claimed that Surendra died by suicide after hanging himself. She said she panicked after his death and buried the body inside the bathroom to avoid legal trouble.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Syed Ali Abbas said police are investigating all aspects of the case. “A case has come to light in which a woman allegedly buried her husband’s body beneath the bathroom floor after his death. She is being questioned, and further facts are being verified,” he said.
Police are awaiting the post-mortem and forensic reports to determine the exact cause of death. Further investigation is underway.
