IIT Alumnus to Conduct AI Training for Migrant Workers in Singapore, Starting in August

iit alumnus to conduct ai training for migrant workers in singapore, starting in august

The Indian Institutes of Technology Alumni Association Singapore (IITAAS) has recently initiated a program to offer training in artificial intelligence (AI) and digital literacy to the migrant workers of Singapore. With the support of the High Commission of India, the aim of this program is to provide training to about 1,000 migrant workers within the next two years.

According to PTI, this program will be formally initiated via a Memorandum of Understanding signed between IITAAS and the Migrant Workers’ Centre (MWC). The MWC is an organisation that promotes the welfare of the migrant workers of Singapore.

The training sessions would be held twice in a month in the MWC Recreation Club in Soon Lee in Singapore’s Jurong industrial belt. The first set of training sessions would commence from August 2026.

The curriculum would comprise basic digital literacy, practical uses in the workplace, and futuristic elements such as artificial intelligence.

As per PTI, the program would come on the back of outreach work done by IITAAS. In March 2026, IITAAS conducted an AI literacy program for more than 100 migrant workers in a full day’s time. The training program was inaugurated by the Indian High Commissioner to Singapore, Dr. Shilpak Ambule.

According to IITAAS President Dhruv Jain, this is the reflection of the determination of the alumni network to bring more inclusiveness into technology, while at the same time benefiting Singapore and India by engaging meaningfully.

Michael Lim, MWC Director, said that such programs can contribute significantly to improving communication, work place safety, and even the well being of the migrant workers by imparting necessary digital skills to them.

Signing of the MoU was attended by NTUC Deputy Secretary General Desmond Tan.

Since many migrant workers in Singapore come from countries like India, Bangladesh, China, and the Philippines, this program will go a long way in bridging the digital gap and making the migrant workers ready for a technological world.

This program reflects the trend towards ensuring that the benefits of the advancement in AI are extended to the workers on the ground and not just to professionals.
