A man has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a pregnant woman and her unborn child in the US state of Georgia, authorities have said. The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office said 26-year-old Devin Anthony was taken into custody on Tuesday at a residence in Riverdale, south of Atlanta, with assistance from the US Marshals Service.
He has been charged with aggravated assault with intent to murder, feticide and malice murder.
The charges relate to the death of 23-year-old Shakiya Pridgen, who was found with multiple gunshot wounds at a home on Peppertree Circle in Decatur early on Tuesday morning.
Police said Ms Pridgen was taken to hospital, where she and her unborn child later died from their injuries.
Investigators believe the suspect fired into the residence from outside the property.
In a statement, DeKalb County Sheriff Melody Maddox described the killings as a “senseless act of violence” that had devastated the victim’s family and the wider community.
“As Sheriff, I believe it is paramount that I use my authority to ensure that we work tirelessly to apprehend dangerous individuals who threaten the safety of our residents,” she said.
Anthony is being held without bond at the DeKalb County Jail while the investigation continues.
