Sampaio’s career as a referee began in the small municipality of Teresina de Goiás in northwestern Brazil, where he started officiating matches at the age of 15. In 2012, he was voted the best referee in the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A, Brazil’s top domestic competition. His younger brother, Sávio, is also a FIFA referee.
