Nehru first became Prime Minister on August 15, 1947, when India gained Independence. However, India did not hold its first general election until 1951-52. The current record being discussed counts only the period after a Prime Minister receives a democratic mandate through a general election. Under that method, Nehru’s elected tenure is counted from May 13, 1952, when he took office after India’s first general election, until his death on May 27, 1964 – a total of 4,398 days.
