'i want justice for my son': amar colony victim's family stages protest

The family of 17-year-old Sai Kumar, who died six days after being shot in southeast Delhi’s Amar Colony, reached Mehrauli Police Station on Tuesday to seek updates on the investigation and press for swift action against all those involved in the case.

Sai Kumar succumbed to his injuries on Monday after spending nearly a week in a coma. He had been shot in the head during an altercation outside an eatery in Amar Colony on May 26.

Speaking to reporters, Sai Kumar’s father said, “I will only get satisfaction when my son gets justice…”

The teenager had suffered a gunshot wound to the head and remained unconscious since the incident. Doctors reportedly said removing the bullet lodged in his brain was too risky. He was declared dead at around 11:45 am on Monday.

According to police, the incident began after Sai objected to a group of boys who were allegedly staring at and making comments about a female friend who was with him. An argument followed, and investigators said the accused later assaulted and shot the teenager.

Following Sai’s death, police arrested two adult associates of the juvenile accused on Monday. Officers said the two were allegedly present with the minor at the time of the shooting.

On Tuesday, members of Sai’s family and supporters gathered to demand justice. Protesters raised slogans and carried posters calling for the arrest of all those linked to the case. Police deployed personnel and erected barricades to maintain law and order and prevent any damage to public property.

A relative of the victim said the family had received assurances from senior police officials regarding their demands.

“The DCP has given us an assurance regarding our demand that this case be fast-tracked and adjudicated within three months, and that all the accused be sentenced to death. We had sought to meet either the Union Home Minister or the Delhi Police Commissioner. The DCP has assured us that, as of today, two or three senior officers, including the CP of the Crime Branch, are waiting for us at the Mehrauli Police Station. We will meet with them first today and tomorrow at around 1:00 PM, we will meet with the Delhi Police Commissioner at the PHQ. Our sole objective is not to cause inconvenience to anyone, but simply to ensure that no one suffers such a fate in the future.”

The family has also demanded clarity regarding the juvenile accused. While the minor was apprehended shortly after the incident, relatives have sought verification of his age and details of the investigation.

Police said they plan to approach the Juvenile Justice Board seeking permission to try the accused as an adult.

Investigators are also searching for the person who allegedly supplied the firearm used in the shooting and the owner of the motorcycle used during the attack. Following Sai Kumar’s death, police said murder charges will be added to the case.

The investigation is continuing, with officials working to identify and arrest all those connected to the crime.
