Mark Zuckerberg-owned Meta may soon have a new rival in the smart glasses segment. Apple is reportedly working on its first pair of smart glasses but the launch timeline of the much-awaited device has been pushed back due to development challenges.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is now targeting a ‘late 2027’ release window. Earlier, the iPhone-maker was expected to launch the product by early 2027
The upcoming Apple glasses are expected to compete directly with products like Meta Ray-Ban Smart Glasses. Pricing is likely to be in the $200 to $500 range (roughly Rs 20,000 to Rs 47,000), which suggests Apple may go for a wider audience instead of a niche premium segment.
Apple Smart Glasses Features (Expected)
In terms of features, the glasses could include built-in cameras for photos and videos, along with speakers and microphones. This means users may be able to listen to music, take calls, and hear notifications via Siri without needing headphones.
The glasses may also offer turn-by-turn walking directions, making them useful for navigation in cities.
Design seems to be a big focus for Apple. The company is said to be testing multiple frame styles, including rectangular and oval shapes, in different sizes. Colour options like black, ocean blue, and light brown are also being explored.
The Cupertino-based tech giant is reportedly designing its own plastic frames instead of partnering with an eyewear brand.
However, those expecting futuristic augmented reality (AR) features may have to wait. The first version of Apple’s glasses is not expected to include in-lens AR displays. That technology is still under development and could take several more years to arrive.
The report also claims that CEO Tim Cook sees this product as a key priority before leadership transitions to John Ternus. If everything goes as planned, Apple’s smart glasses could mark its next big move beyond the iPhone.
