For decades, India has officially banned dowry. The Dowry Prohibition Act was passed in 1961. Yet every few weeks, the country wakes up to another headline about a daughter allegedly harassed, assaulted, or killed over money, gifts, property, or status. The law changed, but the social mindset remained largely intact.
