spain's fifa world cup 2026 squad: eight barcelona stars included, none from real madrid

Spain have announced the 26-man squad for the FIFA World Cup 2026, to be played in the US, Canada and Mexico. The squad features Lamine Yamal but will be without any Real Madrid players, as defenders Dean Huijsen and Carvajal missed out. The team will kick off the campaign against Cape Verde on June 15 before playing Saudi Arabia and Uruguay in Group H on June 21 and 17, respectively.

Spain won their maiden FIFA World Cup title in 2010, but have managed no more than one win in each of the following three seasons. However, Spain seem to be very well placed heading into the FIFA World Cup. They won every game at the 2024 European Championship and followed it up with a gold medal at the Paris Olympics. Spain is now aiming to become the first country to hold the Olympic gold, world and continental titles simultaneously.

A Strong Squad At Disposal

Spanish manager De la Fuente addressed fitness concerns over Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams and Mikel Merino, and said that he has “no doubt” the trio would be ready for Spain’s debut game in Atlanta.

Meanwhile, Athletic Club’s Unai Simón, Arsenal’s David Raya and Barcelona’s Joan García were the three goalkeepers in the squad, with Real Sociedad’s Álex Remiro missing out. Marc Cucurella, Alejandro Grimaldo, Pau Cubarsí, Aymeric Laporte, Marc Pubill, Eric García, Marcos Llorente and Pedro Porro, were the defenders included.

In the midfield, de la Fuente picked Pedri, Fabián Ruiz, Martín Zubimendi, Gavi, Rodri, Álex Baena and Merino, while Mikel Oyarzabal, Dani Olmo, Williams, Yeremy Pino, Ferran Torres, Borja Iglesias, Víctor Muñoz and Yamal, make up the forward line.
