The Lancet Sounds Alarm Over India’s Exploding Anxiety Crisis, Cases Surged 123% since 1990

The study, based on data from the Global Burden of Disease study, led by researchers from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation and the University of Queensland, found that anxiety disorder prevalence in India increased from 2,591.9 cases per lakh population in 1990 to 5,792.8 cases per lakh in 2023. Researchers say the sharp spike reflects a combination of modern lifestyle pressures, economic stress, social isolation, and the lasting psychological impact of the pandemic.
