It has been over 6 decades since the Indian Government banned the derogatory practice of dowry– yet incidents of dowry being celebrated and even being exchanged quite openly at Indian weddings are still a very prominent thing. In fact, the internet is full of videos where a groom’s family can be seen announcing the dowry they received in the form of “gifts”. Adding yet another ‘proud dowry celebration’ to the questionably long list, an instance came forward. The video was allegedly from Ghaziabad, which showed a man announcing the dowry the groom received from the bride’s family.
“1 BMW, 1 crore, 1 lakh, 11 thousand in cash,” the man announced, while people around him looked impressed. The video instantly went viral and left many irked. Most called for stricter punishment against the illegal practice, while some condemned the groom and his family.
Normally, the Indian Government declared a ban on the exchange of dowry in 1961: The Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961. As per the act, violators may face a ‘minimum 6 months imprisonment (up to 2 years) and fines’.
Coming back to the video, Times Now could not confirm the details and the authenticity of the post.

“I’m getting even more angry just looking at him— he doesn’t even know the basic thing that taking dowry is haram,” a user said. “Why do family even agree to this bullsh*t?” asked the next person.

“How are people getting to do this so openly? Isn’t dowry illegal in India?” asked the next. “Do we even have the Dowry Prohibition Act 1961? What is that all about if this is happening openly across the country,” added another.
