Chinese artificial intelligence company Moonshot AI, which competes with US-based AI startups like OpenAI and Anthropic, is reportedly set to release its latest AI model Kimi K3 for public download.
What Is Kimi K3?
Kimi K3 by Moonshot AI is a large language model (LLM) developed to compete with the latest models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google. Unlike many rivals, Kimi K3 is an open-weight model, meaning developers can download it, run it on their own systems and customise it for their needs.
Why Is Everyone Talking About It?
Kimi K3 has gained a lot of attention because it is one of the most powerful open-weight AI models available today. As per Beijing-based company, it performs close to leading closed AI models like OpenAI’s GPT and Anthropic’s Claude, especially for coding and AI agent tasks. Independent tests also rank Kimi K3 among the top AI models in the world.
According to a Bloomberg report, Moonshot AI is expected to release Kimi K3’s model today. By making them publicly available, developers around the world will be able to download, modify and run the model on their own systems.
Moonshot AI founder Yang Zhilin reportedly said the company wants to attract more users by making its AI more open and easily available than closed models from US companies like OpenAI and Anthropic.
Similar to DeepSeek’s launch in early 2025, Kimi K3 has strengthened the view that Chinese companies can build powerful AI models even with lower budgets and limited access to Nvidia’s most advanced AI chips.
“Monday’s release may boost business for cloud AI computing providers who specialise in hosting third-party open models. Made-in-China AI models have surged in global popularity in recent times, led by DeepSeek, as they offer more affordable rates and comparable performance to US offerings,” the Bloomberg report said.
