Millions of Americans who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) may notice that no payment arrives in August 2026, but beneficiaries are not losing any benefits. The change is the result of the Social Security Administration’s payment calendar, which moves deposits when the normal payment date falls on a weekend or federal holiday.
SSI is a federal benefit programme for low-income seniors, people with disabilities and individuals who are blind. Payments are normally issued on the first day of each month.
However, August 1, 2026 falls on a Saturday. Because the Social Security Administration does not send payments on weekends or federal holidays, the August SSI payment will be issued one day early on Friday, July 31, 2026.
As a result, SSI recipients will receive two payments in July:
- July 1, 2026 – the regular July SSI payment
- July 31, 2026 – the payment that counts as the August benefit
Since the August payment is being sent early, there will be no separate SSI deposit during the month of August.
Beneficiaries are not losing a month of benefits
The missing August payment does not mean recipients are losing money. The benefit is simply arriving earlier because of the calendar.
The schedule change is expected to affect about 7 million SSI recipients nationwide.
Maximum SSI amounts for 2026
For 2026, the maximum federal SSI payment is:
- Up to $994 per month for an eligible individual
- Up to $1,491 per month for an eligible couple
Budgeting concerns despite no benefit loss
Although the payment is only being moved forward by one day, some households may find budgeting more challenging because there will be no deposit during August. Recipients will need to make the July 31 payment last until the next scheduled SSI payment in September.
Normal schedule returns in September
The payment calendar returns to normal in September 2026 because September 1 falls on a Tuesday, which is a regular business day.
More calendar related changes later in the year
The Social Security Administration has additional schedule adjustments later in 2026:
- November 2026: Because November 1 falls on a Sunday, the November SSI payment will be sent early on October 30, 2026.
- January 2027: Because January 1 is a federal holiday, SSI recipients will receive payments on December 1, 2026 and December 31, 2026.
Regular Social Security retirement payments are not changing
The schedule change affects only SSI payments, not regular Social Security retirement benefits.
Retirement payments will continue to follow the standard birthday-based schedule:
- Birthdays 1st–10th: second Wednesday of the month
- Birthdays 11th–20th: third Wednesday
- Birthdays 21st–31st: fourth Wednesday
People who began receiving Social Security before May 1997, or those who receive both Social Security and SSI, follow a separate payment schedule, with Social Security generally paid on the 3rd of the month and SSI paid on the 1st or the preceding business day when the 1st falls on a weekend or holiday.
