Iran War Continues To Dent Trump’s Popularity: Only 37% Approve His Presidency

trump's popularity plunges: approval slips to 37%, even core support weakens

New Delhi: US President Donald Trump’s approval rating has dropped to 37%, while 61% of Americans disapprove of his performance, according to a new Washington Post-Ipsos poll, highlighting growing public dissatisfaction with his handling of key domestic and foreign policy issues.

The poll also found that the share of Americans who “strongly approve” of Trump has fallen to 15%, down from 19% in February, marking the lowest level recorded during his current term.

Economy, Iran War Drag Down Ratings

According to the survey, Trump’s approval remains weak on several major issues.

Only 33% of respondents approved of his handling of the economy, while just 29% backed his management of the ongoing Iran conflict. Immigration remained one of his strongest-performing issues, with 40% expressing approval, though that too remained below a majority.

The poll also reflected growing economic anxiety. A record 43% of Americans said they are worse off financially since Trump returned to office, while only 40% said they are optimistic their standard of living will improve.

Majority Opposes Iran War

Public sentiment on the Iran conflict also appeared overwhelmingly negative.

The survey found that 68% of Americans believe the war with Iran was not worth fighting, and a majority said the United States’ leadership role in the world has weakened during the conflict.

The findings come amid broader concerns about the political impact of the conflict. A separate Reuters/Ipsos poll published this week found that 79% of Americans expect the war with Iran to continue for an extended period, while only 37% support US military strikes against Iran.

Midterm Headwinds

The Washington Post-Ipsos poll suggests Trump’s declining approval could pose challenges for Republicans ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

With overall approval stuck at 37%, disapproval at 61%, and enthusiasm among his strongest supporters continuing to decline, the survey points to mounting political headwinds as voters express concerns over the economy, inflation and foreign policy.
