Football fans in Assam will be able to enjoy the FIFA World Cup semi-finals and final without worrying about closing hours, with the state government extending restaurant operating timings for the late-night matches.
Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday announced that restaurants in Guwahati will be allowed to remain open until 3:30 am on July 15, 16, 19 and 20, coinciding with the FIFA World Cup semi-finals and final.
Announcing the decision, the Chief Minister said the move aims to ensure football enthusiasts can watch the high-voltage clashes without inconvenience. “Football unites people, and we want our sports lovers to enjoy the FIFA World Cup semi-finals and final without inconvenience,” Sarma said.
The Chief Minister has authorised the Guwahati district administration to extend restaurant operating hours on the specified dates, allowing eateries, cafés and other establishments hosting live screenings to remain open late into the night. The relaxation is not limited to Guwahati. Sarma said district administrations across the rest of Assam have also been empowered to grant similar extensions wherever Restaurant Owners’ Associations submit requests and there is sufficient public demand.
The decision is expected to boost business for restaurants and cafés organising live screenings while creating a vibrant atmosphere for football lovers across the state during the tournament’s biggest matches. Appealing to fans to celebrate responsibly, the Chief Minister concluded his announcement by saying, Enjoy the beautiful game responsibly.
