A seemingly ordinary train journey in Mumbai has sparked a heated conversation online after a passenger recorded a woman allegedly encouraging a child to litter from a moving local train. The viral clip has drawn widespread criticism, with many social media users calling it an example of poor civic sense being passed on to the next generation.
The short video shows the woman folding a food wrapper before handing it to the child and gesturing towards the open window. Following her instructions, the child throws the wrapper outside the moving train.
The person who recorded the incident claimed they tried to intervene but were met with a dismissive response.
“Teaching her son how to throw garbage from the local train. Tried to stop her, but the lady said, ‘Train aapki property hai kya (Is the train your property)?’ Shameless act,” read the text overlay on the viral video.
The clip quickly triggered a flood of reactions online, with many users expressing anger over what they described as irresponsible parenting. Several argued that children learn civic habits from adults, making such behaviour particularly concerning.
Others backed the decision to film and post the incident, saying public exposure could help discourage similar actions and hold people accountable for littering in public spaces.
Many also criticised the justification that “Ek wrapper se kuch nahi hota (One wrapper doesn’t make a difference),” pointing out that widespread littering begins with such individual actions. They argued that if everyone adopted the same attitude, the cumulative impact on public spaces would be significant.
Several users also highlighted the irony of contributing to litter while later complaining about dirty surroundings or blaming civic authorities for poor sanitation.
Some even urged authorities to identify the woman from the viral video and impose a fine, hoping it would send a stronger message against littering and encourage greater civic responsibility.
