Newman, 58, died on 2 July, four days later, his brother Glenn Newman said. He did not disclose the location or cause of death. The couple began their outreach work in 2018, initially handing out a small number of backpacks containing toiletries, socks, notebooks and other necessities. By 2026, they and a team of nearly 40 volunteers had distributed more than 180,000 backpacks to people living on the streets of Manhattan.
