Who was Wai Ching Ho?

Born in Hong Kong on November 16, 1943, Wai Ching Ho enjoyed a long and distinguished career that extended across television, films, theatre productions and voice acting. Long before becoming a familiar face to Marvel fans, she steadily built an impressive résumé with appearances in several acclaimed American television series.

Her early screen credits included Law & Order, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Flight of the Conchords, and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. Over the years, she continued to take on diverse roles in popular productions including Orange Is the New Black, Fresh Off the Boat, The Good Cop, New Amsterdam, Hustlers, Law & Order: Organized Crime, Only Murders in the Building, and Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens.

However, it was her portrayal of Madame Gao that introduced her to a worldwide audience. Ho first appeared as the enigmatic crime boss in Marvel‘s Daredevil in 2015. Madame Gao was portrayed as one of the most influential figures in Hell’s Kitchen’s criminal underworld, working alongside Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin, Nobu and the Russian mafia. While many of the show’s antagonists were either defeated or killed, Madame Gao remained one of the few villains who escaped justice.

Her character’s popularity led to further appearances in Iron Fist and The Defenders in 2017, where viewers learned that Madame Gao was one of the leaders of the ancient and dangerous organisation known as The Hand. Her calm demeanour, commanding presence and mysterious nature made her one of the Marvel television universe’s most memorable antagonists.

Ho also found success in voice acting. In 2022, she voiced Grandma Wu in Pixar’s critically acclaimed animated film Turning Red. The coming-of-age feature earned widespread praise and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature, introducing Ho’s voice to a new generation of viewers.

Her contributions to theatre were equally significant. Throughout her stage career, she appeared in productions such as Henry VI, Endlings, Snow in Midsummer, and Pearl’s Beauty Salon. Her performance in playwright Celine Song’s Endlings got her widespread applause.
