A veteran New York Police Department detective was shot and wounded in Brooklyn early on Sunday after officers confronted an armed 18-year-old man, police said. Detective Robert L Karroll, who is due to retire in 10 days, was shot in the upper back while wearing a ballistic vest during the incident in the Crown Heights neighbourhood. Police said he suffered minor injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.
