mumbai tree fall pavement slab collapse claim 3 lives as torrential rains lash city heavy downpour alert for monday

As heavy rains continued to pound Mumbai on Sunday, a young man who was passing by near a road lost his life after a grill along with a wall collapsed onto the pavement. In another incident, an 18-year-old motorcyclist and a senior citizen lost their lives in tree-collapse incidents, pushing the death toll from such tragedies in the city to three in less than a week. Such incidents have witnessed a sharp rise as the city is battling torrential rains since the past two days and an alert for heavy downpour on Monday as well.

Tree Fall Deaths

According to civic officials, a tree collapsed on a shop near the Hindi BMC School in the Naupada locality of Kurla West around 12.40 pm.

The victim, Yunus Kundawala, was extricated from the debris and rushed to Fauzia Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead, they said.

Mayor Ritu Tawde visited the site and also announced immediate financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh for the family of the deceased.

In a separate incident, an 18-year-old boy died after a tree branch fell on him while he was riding a motorcycle in the Aarey Colony area of Goregaon East.

While the incident took place on Saturday afternoon, it was reported to the authorities on Sunday, a civic official said.

The victim, Kamar Hasan Raza Jahangir Alam Syed, was travelling on a motorcycle with his friends when a tree branch snapped and fell on his head, he said. He was rushed to a hospital, where the doctors declared him dead, he said.

These incidents have occurred days after an 11-year-old boy was similarly killed and several others were injured after a tree uprooted and fell onto a moving school bus in Chembur on June 30.

Sudden Increase in Tree Fall Incidents

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation officials late Sunday evening said 203 complaints of tree and branch falls were registered across Mumbai between 6 pm from 8 am, comprising 116 in the island city, 83 in the eastern suburbs and 84 in the western suburbs.

Rescue and clearance operations were undertaken at all locations after complaints were received, BMC officials added.

Officials said Mayor Tawde directed the civic administration to immediately conduct a tree audit across Mumbai and undertake pruning wherever necessary on a war footing to prevent such incidents during the monsoon.

Tawde asserted that no negligence would be tolerated in matters concerning citizens’ safety, a civic release said.
