Iran US Israel war Live Updates: JD Vance Accuses Iran Of 'Persian Trick', Says It Has 'A Lot More Game To Play'

Democrats in the United States House of Representatives are split ahead of a vote on a proposed amendment to cut $3.3 billion in US aid to Israel, highlighting deep divisions within the party over Washington’s support for its ally.

According to The Hill, Democratic leaders have told members to vote according to their conscience following what was described as a tense caucus meeting. Congressman Bennie Thompson said he had never witnessed such intense debate over Israel during his years in Congress.

The amendment is expected to fail, with Republicans unlikely to support it and Democrats divided over the proposal. Progressive lawmakers, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib, have backed the measure, while several centrist Democrats have voiced opposition.

Greg Meeks, the ranking Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said he opposes the amendment because he believes Israel should continue receiving necessary assistance. Adam Smith, the ranking Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, also opposed the proposal, arguing it would eliminate humanitarian, military and other forms of US aid to Israel.
