A scuffle broke out between BJP and UDF councillors in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation on Monday amid an escalating political row over the attendance of a jailed BJP councillor.
The clash erupted after the council meeting was adjourned following the passage of agenda items despite strong protests by UDF members.
The Opposition councillors then entered the well of the House, demanding the removal of BJP councillor R Sugathan, who is currently lodged in jail in connection with a case under the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act (KAAPA).
The protest soon turned into a confrontation, with BJP and LDF councillors raising slogans against each other. The situation further deteriorated when a tussle broke out over the council’s attendance register, with attempts reportedly made to snatch and tear it.
According to the UDF, if Sugathan failed to sign the attendance register during Monday’s meeting, he would be marked absent for a second consecutive council session, potentially putting his membership at risk. The Opposition alleged that the attendance register was deliberately removed to prevent any attempt to record his attendance.
Under the relevant rules, a councillor who remains absent for three consecutive council meetings can face disqualification.
The controversy over Sugathan’s attendance has added another layer of political tension to the ongoing dispute within the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation.
No serious injuries were reported in the scuffle, and the meeting ended amid high drama.
