Chinese political dissident Dong Guangping has arrived in Canada, completing a dramatic escape that included a perilous journey across the sea in a small inflatable dinghy to South Korea. His arrival in Toronto marks the successful conclusion of his fourth attempt to flee China after years of detention and persecution for his political activism.
Dong landed in Toronto aboard an Air Canada flight on Friday, where he was reunited with supporters after spending more than a decade trying to secure safe passage out of China. His arrival was confirmed by Chinese-Canadian activist Sheng Xue, who has long campaigned on his behalf.
Sharing the news on social media, Sheng Xue said Dong’s first meal after landing was “a big bowl of noodles with eggs, tomatoes and shrimps,” describing the moment as the end of a years-long effort to bring him to safety.
Risky Escape to South Korea
Dong’s escape began in May, when he crossed the sea from China to a South Korean island aboard a 3.3-meter inflatable dinghy. After reaching South Korea, he was detained by the country’s coast guard for allegedly violating immigration laws.
During subsequent court proceedings, Dong expressed his wish to relocate to Canada, where his wife and two daughters had already been granted resettlement. South Korean authorities later allowed his onward travel, paving the way for his reunion with his family.
Years of Persecution
A former Chinese police officer turned democracy activist, Dong has spent years facing repeated arrests and imprisonment in China.
According to Amnesty International, he was sentenced to three years in prison in 2001 on charges of “inciting subversion of state power.” In 2014, authorities detained him again for eight months after he participated in activities commemorating the victims of the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown.
Multiple Failed Escape Attempts
Dong’s successful arrival in Canada follows several unsuccessful attempts to leave China.
He was previously deported after fleeing to Thailand and Vietnam, while another attempt saw him trying to swim to a Taiwanese-controlled island, an effort that also failed.
His latest escape by inflatable boat ultimately proved successful, allowing him to reach South Korea before securing permission to travel onward to Canada.
Awaiting Official Confirmation
Canada’s Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has not yet publicly commented on Dong’s arrival or his immigration status.
Human rights advocates have hailed his safe arrival as a significant milestone after years of legal battles, failed escape attempts and political persecution, calling it the end of a long and dangerous journey in search of freedom.
