OpenAI Hires Noam Shazeer
His previous startup, Chatacter.AI, has been playing a pretty ignorant role when it comes to safety and moderation. In October 2024, along with Shazeer, de Freitas, and Google, were also sued by Megan Garcia, a mother 14 year old named Sewell Setzer III, a Florida teen who died by suicide after some troubling interactions with a chatbot on character AI based on Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones. Garcia also said that the unmoderated platform groomed and sexually abused her teenage son, who then went through a months-long emotional and mental breakdown because of his strengthening relationship with AI.
