Most HPV infections disappear naturally without causing symptoms. However, persistent infection with certain high-risk HPV strains can lead to abnormal cell changes that may eventually develop into cancers, sometimes years or even decades later. HPV is responsible for approximately 99 per cent of cervical cancer cases and is also linked to cancers of the throat, mouth, anus, penis, vulva, and vagina.
