The Deeper Picture

Not everything is alarming. When you strip out food and energy, what economists call core inflation, the picture looks calmer. Core prices were up 2.9% year on year, barely changed from 2.8% in April. Month to month, core inflation rose just 0.2%, about half the pace of the previous month.
