Obesity Surge in Delhi’s Private Schools: AIIMS Links It to Future Heart Disease Risk

The research was based on the study done on 4,000 students aged between 6 to 19 across both government and private schools in Delhi. It showed that 13.4% of children were obese and 7.4% suffered from hypertension. One of the key findings of the study was that there is a troubling trend that is more pronounced in children from wealthier backgrounds. For example, in private schools 24% of students were classified as obese, compared to only 4.5% in government institutions. This study also shows that the students from private schools have higher rates of central obesity, metabolic syndrome and elevated blood sugar, all of which are conditions that raise the risk for type diabetes, psychological issues and cardiovascular disease.
