Hochschild found that work could offer something home increasingly struggled to provide: recognition, structure, measurable achievement and adult companionship. Home, meanwhile, could feel like another shift filled with childcare, housework, negotiation and unfinished tasks. The boundary had begun to invert. Work could resemble refuge, while home could resemble labour.
